Screenscope – “Dispatches from the Gulf 2: Research • Innovation • Discovery”
How have scientists discovered the environmental impact on the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill? That is the question “Dispatches from the Gulf 2” – a sequel to the one-hour documentary from Emmy® Award-winning filmmakers Marilyn and Hal Weiner – seeks to explore.
Following a disaster that put thousands of communities and millions of citizens at risk, how is the ocean responding? The program chronicles the work by hundreds of research scientists from multiple disciplines who are rallying around the very big puzzle that oil pollution presents. Along the way, new instruments are being built, new experiments are being designed, and first-of-their-kind surveys are being conducted.
For instance, scientists are working hard to determine why so many dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico have failing pregnancies. And those mothers that do deliver calves end up losing their young before they reach maturity. The answer may lie in their level of oil exposure – both through their lungs and in the food web.
“Dispatches from the Gulf 2” is hosted and narrated by Matt Damon and is the 15th episode in the international television series, “Journey to Planet Earth.”
